Hero caps spectacular meet - 07/25/2009

They were betting Karakorum On Black, the other half of the entry, bringing the odds down to 5/2. With the scratch of Buy A Personality, the role of closer fell into Mike Luzzi's lap with Knife and Fork, really cranked up, the main threat. Mandate, the 4/5 favorite, was forced to chase an honest pace set by Karakorum On Black and joined by Seeyouatsergios. Knife and Fork was uncharacteristically close in the early going while Hero relaxed off the pace. Mike Luzzi saw that Jorge Chavez had a ton of horse with Knife and Fork, and moved him into contention on the turn, taking him outside and assuming the lead after the quarter pole. Opening up in the stretch, Chernobyl's Hero had just enough to hold off the hard charging Knife and Fork, getting Karakorum Farm its 8th victory for the meeting.

Smarty Debuts in Mud - 12/28/2008

Smarty Karakorum made his debut over a good inner track at Aqueduct versus ten other state-bred juvenile colts. He broke well under Jose Espinoza and was about eight lengths off the early leaders through a wicked opening quarter in :21.77. Smarty failed to make an impact the rest of the way while racing a bit greenly over the off going while the highly regarded firster Mr. Fantasy ran off to a double-digit win. Smarty will improve with further racing experience and should not run into any more buzzsaws during the winter meet.

Tornado Gets Outrun in the Mud - 12/27/2008

Karakorum Tornado was again entered in a state-bred non-winners of one allowance over a good inner track and drew the extreme outside post versus nine other rivals. Tornado actually broke on top but was outrun for the early lead and wound up in the middle of the pack in the early going. But, he never made his presence felt during the remainder of the race and finish unplaced. Tornado clearly prefers grass over dirt and may have to drop in class to compete over the dirt.

Sandy Finishes Well To Gain Fourth - 12/27/2008

Say Karakorm Sandy, with Sebastian Morales up, was bumped at the start in a non-winners of two lifetime sprint contested over a muddy Aqueduct inner track. Sandy then settled about ten lengths behind the early leader and 4/5 favorite, Lincoln Road, through quick fractions of :22.17 and :45.68. He made a steady wide rally turning into the stretch and passed several rivals down the lane to finish fourth while only three lengths behind the place finisher. Sandy can annex this condition during the winter

Yo Goes Wire to Wire in Allowance Sprint - 12/13/2008

After just missing in her first try versus winners, Yo Karakorum again faced state-bred non-winners of one juvenile fillies including 2/5 favorite My Anguilla. She broke alertly from her outside post and immediately grabbed a clear lead over the favorite. Yo, with Jose Espinoza up, set fractions of :22.75 and :46.36 and turned for home with an increasing lead. She held the favorite safe to win by over two lengths in 1:12.21 and has already earned $61,800 in just three career starts. Yo just might be a force to reckon with in the state-bred juvenile filly division over the winter at Aqueduct.

Way Runs Better Over Another Off Track - 12/12/2008

Way to Karakorum yet again encountered a less than fast track in a $25k maiden-claiming state-bred sprint that drew a field of ten juvenile fillies. Under new jock Stewart Elliott, Way settled in the middle of the pack about four lengths outside the early leaders. She made a steady rally, through soft fractions of :23.32 and :47.64, from sixth place on the backside to second place in deep stretch. Way could not catch the runaway favorite Devilish Ghost and tired a bit inside the sixteenth pole to finish in third place while beaten only a length for the place spot. Way should find a field she can beat at this level in early 2009

Princess Rallies to Gain Place in Dropdown - 12/10/2008

Chernobyl Princess was dropped from the $35k to the $10k non-winners of two races claiming level for distaffers. After breaking a bit slower than usual from her rail position in a field of eleven, Princess settled in midpack along the inside. Jockey Sebastian Morales then moved Princess to the outside down the backside and she began a steady rally entering the far turn. She continued to gain ground while between horses entering the stretch as the leader Taintedlove built an insurmountable lead. Princess easily gained the place spot while well clear of her other rivals and therefore has the look of a future winner at this level.

Sandy Races Evenly After Slow Break - 12/10/2008

Say Karakorm Sandy, with Jose Espinoza up, was dropped to the $10k non-winners of two races claiming level in a sprint race that drew eleven horses. On a track listed as fast but one that endured rain for most of the day, Sandy broke near the back of the pack and was thus a little further back than normal. He did mount a steady rally from the far turn to the top of the stretch to advance into fourth place. But, Sandy couldn’t sustain his rally down the lane and finished unplaced. On his best race, he can compete at this level.

Legend Stumbles At Start in Damon Runyon Stakes - 12/07/2008

Karakorum Legend, with Richard Migliore aboard, made his initial dirt start in the $75k added Damon Runyan stakes versus a strong group of state-bred juveniles going one mile and seventy yards. Legend had gate problems for the fourth time in as many starts. After hopping and stumbling at the start, he showed no interest in racing and went into a common gallop. After trailing the field for the first mile, Legend passed a few tired rivals at the end. The winner, Haynesfield, should go on to become a dominant player in the NY-bred stakes scene. We are sending Legend back down to Pat’s farm in Florida where he will be evaluated and gelded so that he can get focused on racing. He will get re-trained in the gate and sent back up for the spring season.

Pirate Shows Good Speed Before Giving Way - 12/06/2008

Karakorum Pirate drew the outside post in a field of ten juvenile $25k maiden-claiming state-breds sprinting 6-furlongs. Pirate broke sharply under apprentice Maylan Studart but 6/5 favorite Forty Third Recon outsprinted him to gain the early lead. He was only a few lengths from that leader for the first half mile and moved into second turning for home. Even though he faded in midstretch, Pirate showed good speed over the inner oval. So, if he draws a better post next time out, Pirate might be able to carry his speed further and also won’t have to face this runaway winner again.

Sweetheart Shows Early Foot While Racing Wide - 12/03/2008

Karakormsweetheart, under rider Navin Mangalee, drew post ten in a field of twelve $25k state-bred maiden-claiming juvenile fillies. She forced the pace from the outset while racing wide and chasing the 9/5 favorite Knot News through a quarter in :22.86. Sweetheart continued 3-wide turning for home but gave way soon after entering the stretch. Maybe a better post will help Sweetheart carry her speed further next time out.

On Black Races Wide in Mud - 11/30/2008

Karakorum On Black, under Jeffrey Sanchez, was entered in a $50k state-bred maiden-claiming sprint for juvenile colts. Over a muddy track, On Black settled in third, two lengths from the leaders, through a quarter in :22.59. He was still in the hunt turning for home while racing wide but gave way inside the sixteenth pole to finish unplaced. This effort by On Black can be tossed because he has shown the ability to compete at this level.

Tornado Shows Speed in Return to Dirt - 11/27/2008

Karakorum Tornado was dropped to the $20k claiming level in his return to the dirt while going 6 ½ furlongs. Tornado broke well under Jose Espinoza and held a position along the rail in third place behind Count by Five. Tornado remained in striking position as the field turned for home after fractions of :22.86 and :46.31. But Tornado lacked a strong late kick down the lane to finish in the middle of the pack. Despite this finish, he can make his presence felt at this level during the winter meet.

Yo Gets Caught at Line Versus Winners - 11/26/2008

After winning her debut, Yo Karakorum stepped up to the state-bred non-winners of one allowance level for juvenile fillies. After breaking towards the rear, she rushed up to get a clear early lead. Under Jose Espinoza, Yo set quick fractions of :22.21 and :45.89 over the good track and turned for home with a three length lead. She continued to gamely hold a clear lead down the stretch, while drifting out slightly, but got caught at the wire by the 8/5 favorite Akilina while well clear of the third place finisher. Yo has to speed to quickly get through this condition over the inner track
